World of Warcraft studio Blizzard has announced it’s working on a brand new survival game, set in an all-new universe.

The news was revealed via the developer asking for people to join its team to work on the new game via its Twitter account. A recruitment post linked in the Tweet reads as follows. “Blizzard is embarking on our next quest. We are going on a journey to a whole new universe, home to a brand-new survival game for PC and console. A place full of heroes we have yet to meet, stories yet to be told, and adventures yet to be lived. A vast realm of possibility, waiting to be explored.”

It’s obviously early days yet for the project, as it doesn’t even have a name. However, we do know that from the job descriptions that the game is intended to be a “AAA survival game”. It’ll also be a brand new IP and not based on an existing property. While Blizzard is known for Warcraft and Diablo, its been some time since it made a new IP. The last, in fact, was hero shooter Overwatch back in 2016.

There’s no word on specific formats, or a timeframe for the new game. It’s also worth noting that this announcement comes following Xbox’s announcement of it’s intention to purchase Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion USD. Whether that means the Blizzard survival game will end up an Xbox exclusive? We’ve probably got some time before we find out. We certainly won’t find out at Blizzcon 2022. (That event’s been delayed indefinitely.)

Before this new survival game, however, Blizzard are still beavering away at Overwatch 2 and Diablo 5, which may not see the light of day until 2023. Presumably, there’ll be updates on those at some point this year.
