Cliff Bleszinski has promised “very smooth” online multiplayer for the launch day of Gears of War 3.
“It’s a September 20 launch date with a very smooth online experience,” he said, speaking at a Microsoft Q&A session in Los Angeles ahead of this week’s E3 expo. “In this day and age you don’t want to be a campaign rental, that’s the bottom line.”
Bleszinski also confirmed Gears of War 3 will support dedicated servers.
Earlier the Epic designer spoke of the need to move on from the studio’s troubles with multiplayer in Gears of War 2.
“Coming off of Gears 2 when the online was as rocky as it was – and to be fair, we put a lot of title updates into it to make it a pretty solid experience – the memory of Gears 2’s online is a very bad one, specifically for the VS, right?” he said.
“Matchmaking times were very very long, and the game at times would lag up. Even though we fixed all that, the perception still existed. Gears [2] felt like, ‘I’ll play through the campaign, and then I’ll play Horde’. We cracked at this fun VS mode that a lot of people ignored, except for a few die-hards.”
Blezinski added that he felt “crushed” when it initially seemed that a multiplayer beta for Gears of War 3 would be impossible.
