The Call of Duty franchise is no stranger to topping the charts every time its annual release arrives for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players wanting to see how developers have managed to reinvent the fast-paced gameplay that keeps them coming back for more. The arrival of Omnimovement with Black Ops 6 has changed the game with players now armed with the ability to move in all kinds of directions.

Despite a mixed reception to the Season 1 update, Black Ops 6 continues to break records. 30 days after its release, Activision has revealed Treyarch’s 2024 release has become the most successful Call of Duty instalment in the history of the shooter franchise.

Black Ops 6 is the most successful CoD ever

November 25 marked a month since the Black Ops 6 servers were switched on. Since then, it appears players have thoroughly enjoyed loading into multiplayer, the mind-bending campaign, and an addicting round-based Zombies mode. To celebrate its first month, Activision shared that Black Ops 6 has the highest number of total players, the most hours played, and the most matches played out of any entry into the franchise.

With more fans loading into matches than ever before, the new BLoPS is now the most successful Call of Duty title of all-time cementing its position at the top of the first-person shooter genre. Since launching in 2010, the Black Ops series has become a mainstay of the franchise thanks to its well-built multiplayer and Zombies modes which continue to engage the community.

Why is Black Ops 6 so successful?

While multiplayer has managed to capitalise on small innovations to inject a breath of fresh air into online Call of Duty matches, the return of the hugely popular round-based Zombies formula has sparked a huge resurgence in fans aiming to fend off endless waves of the undead in addition to completing those fiendish Easter Eggs scattered across Terminsu and Liberty Falls.

Multiplayer still has its teething issues where some can’t even throw their grenades in a straight line but Zombies has demonstrated there’s no need to change the formula if it already works. The release of the Citadelle Des Morts map as part of the Season 1 Reloaded update is bound to see another spike in the player count as players enter the next chapter of the Dark Aether storyline.

As the post-launch seasons continue to arrive with fresh batches of content, Black Ops 6 has sparked a change of momentum for Call of Duty. We’ll have to wait and see if it can keep it going when attention turns to 2025’s release rumoured to pick up where 2012’s Black Ops 2 left off.
