BioWare, if you don’t already know, are the people responsible for NeverWinter Nights and Baldur’s Gate. Having moved their attentions to console development in more recent times (Xbox 360 exclusive Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire), BioWare’s return to the PC scene comes in the shape of Dragon Age.

Dragon Age will be much darker than the normal BioWare stuff, and is heavily influenced by modern fantasy such as George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones. It also sounds like the game will offer plenty of replay value, with each character type having its own origin story and unique first few hours to the game.

Combat will be familiar to Baldur’s Gate players, utilizing an evolved version of its tactical real-time combat style. The game isn’t a Dungeons and Dragons game, but BioWare is ensuring the game sticks to a tried and tested class and rules system.

The conversation system seen in Mass Effect has been impressing early onlookers and Dragon Age will feature a modified version of this system. It’s sounding great, but don’t get too excited just yet as the game won’t be out until late 2007 at the earliest.
