An MMO will topple World of Warcraft someday, Star Wars: The Old Republic writing director Daniel Erickson has told VideoGamer.com.

Whether or not an MMO can topple World of Warcraft has been a hot topic for many years now, and Erickson has the same opinion as most people: it will happen, but might take a long time.

“Great games grow the market, and the market grows over time,” said Erickson. “These are the only truths that we seen continually go. So yeah, I absolutely think somebody will be bigger than WoW someday. Whether that’s next year or in twenty years from now, who knows.”

Erickson also believes it’s not necessary that an MMO must topple WoW – more than one product can be successful at any one time.

Asked if the genre can support more than one WoW-sized success, Erickson said: “Absolutely. And perhaps not today, and perhaps not…maybe not right in that size. But you can definitely have, I think you’ll see ones in the future that break a little bit more along territorial lines. I think that you’ll see ones that break more along age lines and stuff like that.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic will be released later this year.

What do you reckon? Will any game topple WoW in the near future? Could that game be The Old Republic? MMO Rift is currently doing a good job at attracting WoW players looking for something new, but will any game ever reach the subscriber numbers Blizzard’s game boasts?
