Irrational Games’ head Ken Levine has stated he is still hopeful for a BioShock film, according to an interview with IndustryGamers.
A film version of the successful video game was first mentioned as a possibility in 2008 when Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski began working on early stages of the project before budgetary issues caused it to fall into development hell.
However Levine remains hopeful.
“I think for us as a company, we don’t have any need to get a movie made. We’d like to have a movie made, but it would have to be the right one, and we’ve had the opportunity to get it made and unless all the right pieces are in place – it’s hard enough to get a movie made when all the right pieces are in place. If you don’t start with the right pieces, you don’t have a prayer,” he said.
“It’s a moving puzzle, but I’m going to be continually talking to people about it. It’s definitely something that’s still in the conversation.”
Irrational Games are currently in the process of developing the third in the BioShock series, Bioshock: Infinite.
Considering how narrative driven BioShock is it’s likely to make for an interesting film. Although whether a great game can manage to avoid the traditional woes we see when these things make a crossover to the silver screen is another story.
