Rogue Warrior is described as an authentic, tactical first-person shooter for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The game is based on the book series by Richard (Dick) Marcinko, a former U.S. Navy SEAL and founder of SEAL Team Six and Red Cell.

We are very excited to be working on Rogue Warrior, which allows us the chance to bring Bethesda’s creative vision and development expertise to this brand,” said Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda Softworks. “This game marks our return to shooters since our highly successful Terminator series, and we hope to offer fans a true next-generation gameplay experience.

The game is in development at Zombie Studios using the Unreal Engine 3, and central to the game’s experience is the idea of a freeform battlefield, giving players the freedom to choose how to complete a mission or objective. This is said to separate the game from more traditional shooters that feature scripted events and contained spaces.

A next-gen game wouldn’t be complete without next-gen AI, and Rogue Warrior sounds up to the task in that department. NPCs will react and fight realistically, see and hear others, and respond as a team. The game will also feature a strong multiplayer element, with ten gameplay modes and a system which allows maps to be created using a selection of map “tiles.” In total more than 200 maps can be created.

The multiplayer element is also found in the campaign mode, with online co-op play for up to four players, with players able to join or leave an existing game at any time. The game’s story puts you in control of Dick Marcinko, leader of an elite SEAL unit trapped behind enemy lines in North Korea. You’re on a covert mission to assess the threat of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, when a war between North and South Korea breaks out and you must lead your team back into South Korea

Rogue Warrior is the game we’ve been waiting to make for years,” said Mark Long, lead producer at Zombie Studios. “We’re using terrific technology in a way that’s different from other games – we have a unique HUD and control system for your team-mates, on-the-fly co-op play, and we’ve really focused our efforts on making multiplayer more fun and challenging by giving you lots of modes and hundreds of maps you can see and play. We’re thrilled to be working with Bethesda on this new initiative using a brand we know and love.

Rogue Warrior is planned for release in autumn 2007.
