According to Bethesda’s Todd Howard, Skyrim’s game director, consoles are much better than PCs for showing off a game at trade shows. Howard has shown a particular preference for the Xbox 360 in this respect.

“For things like this [trade shows] – I don’t know if people realise – but as a game developer, the 360 is just much easier to show it on: from getting it started, to showing it, to controlling it, it’s just much easier to demo on logistically,” Howard told Ausgamers.

He’s aware the PC version has the graphical edge over its console counterparts, but still finds the 360 the better machine for demonstrations.

“Obviously the PC version looks better,” he explained. “It has higher textures, it can run much higher resolution and a lot more graphic features.”

“We tend to show it on 360 so that it’s a good baseline for people to look at. So when they then see the PC version it’s going to go up. We’d rather do that than have people see the 360 later and it takes a step down.”

Unlike many developers, Bethesda has never shown preferential treatment to the PC version, and as such, nobody is disappointed when they finally see footage of the console version. The Skyrim trailer released in February was captured entirely on 360.

Skyrim is due for release on November 11, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
