Battlefield 4’s second-screen functionality will not be supported on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, it’s been revealed.

The move means that current-gen users will not be able to use Battlefield 4’s ‘Battlescreen’ – a stats screen that displays a mini-map of the battlefield and match details on a tablet.

The reason, Battlelog assistant producer Jesper Nielsen explains (via Engadget), is due to “the web”.

“Battlelog is powered by the web, and that has a lot of implications,” he says. “There are a lot of different things you can do, things you can do faster, rather than building stuff in native code.”

One such thing, Nielsen suggests, is rolling out patches and title updates to the console versions far more quickly.

“It’s going to be a lot easier for us to actually update things from the in-game Battlelog than would otherwise be the case,” he says. “You’d have to do patches normally; here we can actually do things almost by the flick of a finger.”

It isn’t yet known how this will affect Commander Mode, a mode that lets users issue orders and call in support via the game and their tablet.

Battlefield 4 launches on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 1, with next-gen versions to follow later in the year.
