DICE rendering architect Johan Andersson has answered questions over the technical details of Battlefield 3 on consoles, confirming that the game will run at 720p and at 30 frames per second. He’s also pointed out that the game will run at a higher resolution than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 does on the PlayStation 3.
“We think huge levels, lots of players, great effects, destruction, vehicles & varied gameplay are more important than 1080p,” said Andersson on Twitter.
“No we always do 30 fps on consoles, not possible to fit in vehicles, fx, scale and all players otherwise,” he added in response to a Tweet about the frame rate of the game on consoles.
In defence of Battlefield 3 on consoles, Andersson compared the upcoming FPS to others currently on the market.
“Name a single FPS game that runs at 1080p on any of the consoles? [We] would have to do huge gameplay cuts,” he said. “Modern Warfare 2 runs at 1024×600 on PS3 with 2x MSAA. And I didn’t do any digs at COD, just explained our trade-offs.”
Does it matter to you that Battlefield 3 on consoles won’t run as smoothly or as high res as the PC version? Did you ever expect it would?
