The official Battlefield Twitter account has deleted two controversial Tweets which used the hashtag “justWWIthings” after receiving complaints relating to their apparent lack of respect for WW1.

“We apologize for any offense taken to content posted earlier. It was not at all our intent to show any lack of respect to the WW1 era,” reads a statement made from the account.

The now deleted tweets featured an uneasy element of lad banter blended with WW1 imagery from the game.

The first used the caption “when you’re too hot for the club” over the image of a soldier using a flamethrower.

The second tweet showed a soldier holding a pistol with an airship crashing in the background. The caption read: “When your squad is looking on point.”

A later statement offered by EA added that the Twitter account activity “did not treat the World War 1 era with the respect and sensitivity that we have strived to maintain with the game and our communications”.

The marketing blunder comes after the game topped the UK chart for two weeks running, leaving stablemate Titalfall 2 in its dust. Whether or not the Tweets have a lasting damage to the game’s longevity remains to be seen, though we doubt this will be the case.

As a game Battlefield 1 is actually very good, with our own Dave awarding it a 9/10 in his review.
