As one of the biggest RPGs in all of gaming, Baldur’s Gate 3 has the biggest video game script of all time. With over 2 million words, almost four times that of War and Peace, Larian’s RPG is a behemoth of writing, but it’s also been beaten.

As it turns out, Warhorse Games’ Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has overtaken Baldur’s Gate 3 as the longest video game script ever written. With a release date set for next year, Larian’s script record has been surprisingly short, but very, very sweet.

Baldur’s Gate 3 falls to second place

Speaking to fans on Twitter, Warhorse Games founder Daniel Vavra revealed the massive script size for the upcoming RPG. While Larian managed to write over 2,000,000 words for BG3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 weighs in at a gargantuan 2,200,000 words.

“Guess how big the script is?” Vavra rhetorically asked fans. “2,200,000 WORDS! Or 11,000 typical screenwriting pages. That’s 100 scripts for a typical two-hour movie. Or about 25 average novels.”

For comparison, some of the biggest games of all time are nowhere close to this number in terms of word count. Planescape: Torment, an RPG that oftentimes feels like reading multiple novels, comes in at just over 1,000,000 words. Every single book in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire still only weighs in at 1,736,000 words.

Baldur’s Gate 3 crossing the 2 million word mark was a massive achievement, but to beat that is even more impressive. Let’s just hope the writing is as good and as memorable as Larian’s breakout RPG.

An exciting time for fans

Kingdom Come: Deliverance fans have immediately turned to hype after the reveal of the sequel’s word count. With the word count for the original game resting at 800,000 words, its upcoming successor is sizing up very well.

“I’m a glut for dialogue-heavy games,” one fan said. “I’m so hyped to talk to all the people. Gimme that delicious plot and world-building!”

“I love how extensive the dialogue branching is in this game,” said another. “KCD has REAL branching dialogue with consequences and different ways to complete each quest. Y’all are the real RPG, no contest.”

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is scheduled to release on PC and console in 2025.
