Both titles are based on Baja racing which originates from the Southern Californian desert on the Baja peninsula. Competitors in the race attempt to build the ultimate off-road racer, and the better the suspension, tyres and roll cage, the greater chance they have of winning.
First up is Baja Mania, where players race in a variety of off-road vehicles, in competitions featuring up to 15 competitors. Races are checkpoint-based with players required to capture flags at each checkpoint and display them on their aerial to prove that they have finished first.
The game features three terrain types and there are three varieties of each terrain to race in. Game modes include Career, Arcade and versus multiplayer for two players. In career mode players will earn money and use this to buy vehicle upgrades to improve the performance of their vehicle.
As the title suggests, Baja Destruction, although based on the same Baja racing, is focussed much more heavily on vehicle combat. The game is described as a fantasy racer that blends Mad Max with traditional Baja racing.
Races consist of 15 competitors, and just as in Baja Mania there are three types of terrain and three variants of each. There’s also a large variety of vehicles to race with and each features performance upgrades and two main types of weapon. These weapons range from simple forward-firing guns to advanced auto-targeting systems that won’t let the opposition get away unscathed.
Both games will fully utilise the Wii controllers, making use of the Wii remote tilt sensors to act as a steering wheel and to control vehicle speed.
There are also PS2 versions of both games in development, and you can expect the Wii versions to arrive in the first quarter of 2007.
