Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was once a reviled and controversial entry in the tactical espionage series. Now, it’s beloved enough to have a full co-op mod in the works by one very talented fan.

24-years after its initial release, modder and obvious MGS fan SolidSnake11 is working on bringing full two-player co-op gameplay to the stunning PS2 game, and it’s going extraordinarily well.

Metal Gear Solid 2: The Twin Snakes

Shown off in a recent YouTube video, SolidSnake11’s co-op mod for Sons of Liberty is currently in development. Shown off for the first time just last week, the modder has already made some pretty substantial progress.

“[I] was interested in seeing how the game would react with two active players on screen,” the modder said. “While I did rewrite some code to make it work and have two players be able to interact with the enemies and whatnot, I still didn’t bother patching a lot of stuff, which is why it’s glitchy as hell.”

In the week since, some incredible progress has been made. A single PC can play the game with two controllers connected for  couch co-op goodness. Additionally, both players now appear on the game’s RADAR, allowing both players to track each other if needed.

When the mod launches whenever it’s ready, the mod will be playable online via a tool such as Parsec. However, the mod is primarily created as a couch co-op option for players on PC, and it’s incredibly cool.

As someone who always wished the MGS series had a co-op mode to entertain my annoying siblings, this is a dream come true. Whether or not the co-op mod is actually fun to play in some of the game’s more hectic moments is yet to be seen, but it’s fantastic that it exists anyway.

At the time of writing, the Metal Gear Solid series is sparking back to life with Konami’s closely-approaching remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Coming with its own online mode, the upcoming Unreal Engine 5 remake is an incredibly faithful return to the PS2 original, even bringing back its risque theatre mode.
