Atari has sold its California-based studio to Chinese MMO specialist Perfect World for $50 million, according to Develop.

Cryptic was originally acquired by Atari in 2008 for $27 million, becoming the developer of such titles as Star Trek Online and Champions Online.

Atari has stated it sold the studio to focus on “fewer but more profitable releases and further expansion into casual online and mobile games”.

The deal has yet to be finalised.

Interesting that Atari is moving further into casual online gaming territory. It’s unclear whether in the next few years more companies will move away from big-scale MMOs in the interest of the popular and potentially more lucrative online casual market.
