Ubisoft has shown off some gameplay from the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage as part of its Ubisoft Forward broadcast, and it really does look like a throwback to the classic first two Assassin’s Creed games in the best of ways.

The new footage showed off a good chunk of gameplay, with our hero Basim bounding around the streets of Baghdad. The parkour made famous by Ezio and Altair in the first two games is not only back, but looks better than ever – so much so we had to double-take that we weren’t just looking at a 4K remaster of the original game. There’s some telltale signs, of course, mostly in the form of the HUD that’s clearly an iteration of those seen in recent AC titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

This also extends to the gameplay, with Basim perched atop rooftops and examining his surroundings before going in for a strike. He’ll be able to use his trusty bird (which once more works like a living UAV drone) to scout out the area, but he’ll also be able to use a range of tools at his disposal such as blowdarts and distracting smoke bombs, and even traps for unsuspecting guards, and to make his escape should he get into trouble.

In fact, this love letter to the original two games even goes one step further, with Ubisoft confirming that there’ll be a visual ‘nostalgia filter’ you’ll be able to apply to the game that gives the game’s colour grading a colder, blue tint. They talk about this, and more way that they intend to honour the legacy of the series in a ‘Return to the Roots’ video posted late last week.

It wasn’t the only Assassin’s Creed news we got in today’s show – with Ubisoft confirming that VR title Assassin’s Creed Nexus will allow Quest 2 & Meta Quest 3 owners to play the first VR AC game as Ezio, Kassandra or Connor. Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade – the upcoming mobile game – is taking sign-ups for a closed beta right now.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage will launch on October 12, 2023 and will be at a lower price than a usual Assassin’s Creed game, with Ubisoft saying it wanted the price to match the game’s “condensed” scope. It’ll arrive on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC when it does.
