UPDATE: ASDA has told VideoGamer.com that it has “had no confirmation from Sony” regarding PS4 release timings, and its comments are “merely an estimation”.

ORIGINAL STORY: PlayStation 4 will launch in the UK later this year, supermarket chain ASDA has stated.

In a press release promoting the retailer’s pre-order initiative, ASDA revealed that PS4 is “set to hit UK stores at the end of this year,” despite Sony’s decision to remain tight-lipped over revealing which territories it’s planning to launch the console in this side of Christmas.

ASDA’s website suggests that the date could be an assumption based on Sony’s previous communications, however.

“The current expected date of release made by Sony is Christmas 2013,” ASDA says on its website. “Asda make no Guarantees that this is correct or will not change and Asda shall not be held responsible if Sony change or delay the release date of the Sony PlayStation 4 in the UK and or limit stock.”

ASDA’s comments mark the second time a retailer has suggested that PlayStation 4 will launch in the UK this year.

Earlier this month, GameStop stated that Sony is planning to “introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013”.

Sony has previously announced that PlayStation 4 will launch in at least one territory this ‘Holiday’, but has yet to confirm precise launch details.

VideoGamer.com has contacted both ASDA and SCEE for comment, and will update when we hear back.
