Animal Crossing hackers are creating custom trees which sprout star fragments instead of fruit, and it’s all the rage in the community (via Polygon).
First things first, it is not possible to plant a star fragment tree in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This is only possible through modding, and given how glowy and sparkly the star fragment items are, there’s quite the demand for bioluminescent forests in the Animal Crossing community.

This Twitter user, peachyisIe, said that the modded trees are sold through Discords for approximately 200 to 400 Nook Miles Tickets, if not more. Other hackers have been charging real-world currency for the trees, with offers of one tree for $3.00, or a bundle of 40 trees for $50.00.

It is also possible to create trees which bloom a variety of items, like flowers, K.K. Slider songs, and dinosaur bones. It isn’t clear whether these trees will corrupt the player’s game, though there is currently no evidence to support this, and how long they will last. Nintendo may roll out a patch to discourage modding in this manner, and those who purchase the trees are aware of the consequences, whatever they may be.
