Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp will be getting paid memberships in a future update, and they will offer two tiers with different features (via GamesIndustry.biz).
Nintendo’s collaboration with Japanese developer DeNA has given rise to a sprinkling of mobile adaptations of its most successful properties. Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Mario Kart Tour, and Pokémon Masters have been churning out the cash for the developer and publisher as it expands into the mobile market. It has been careful with its monetisation strategies, though: “it’s something we decide looking at the game content of each app, as well as the IP used and the player that we’re targeting.”
So far, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp has grossed $111 million in lifetime revenue despite the mean spend per player being only $3.90. Now, Nintendo will be introducing two new paid memberships to the game. One will let players choose an animal to look after their campsite and complete tasks on their behalf. The other will give players fortune cookies and boost their storage for furniture and clothing items.
At the moment, this is all we know about the scheme, but Nintendo will be revealing a video that explains what is included and for how much on November 21. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is currently one of the weakest performing mobile games under the developer’s umbrella, and imaginably Nintendo has chosen to add these two memberships to improve its earnings. Animal Crossing: New Horizons will debut on the Nintendo Switch in March, and boasts eight-player online multiplayer.
