Revenue from merchandise now accounts for almost half of Rovio’s revenue, with consumers simply unable to get enough of the lovable Angry Birds plush toys, reports The Guardian.

45 per cent of revenues came from merchandise, up from around 30 per cent in the previous year. The figure tripled from €22.6m in 2011 to €68.5m in 2012.

Rovio revenue overall more than doubled year-on-year to €152.2m (£129m), and generated a net profit after tax of €55.5m (£47m) – 263 million monthly active players helped achieve this.

“Rovio has grown from a phenomenon to a very successful global business. In 2010 we set out to build an entertainment company and after last years performance we are on a strong path to achieve our goal,” said chief executive Mikael Hed.

The firm has invested heavily in future growth through the Angry Birds Toons series and the planned 2016 Angry Birds movie.

“We will continue to strengthen our position in the entertainment business through continuing to innovate on our existing brands, exploring creating new IP as well as exploring opportunities with external parties,” said Hed.

2016 seems a long way off. Do you think the Angry Birds will remain a leading brand three years from now?
