Following the success of the Fallout TV show, Amazon is working on an adaptation of God of War. Reportedly based on the modern Norse games instead of the Greek originals, the series has been greenlit for two seasons at Amazon.
With a large group of writers currently working on the series, showrunner Ronald D. Moore admitted that he attempted to play the games, but couldn’t figure out modern controllers.
God of War showrunner hasn’t played the games
Speaking on The Sackoff Show, Moore revealed that two seasons of God of War are currently in the writing stage at Amazon.
“Right now, I’m working on an adaptation of… there’s a video game called God of War,” Moore said. “It’s a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of, and they’ve asked me to come in. So I’m literally in the Writers Room, you know, working on that.”
Moore explained that working on such a huge property is daunting, especially since he hasn’t been able to get to grips with modern control schemes for the games. As a child of the arcades, the showrunner isn’t used to more complex controllers which stopped him from being able to experience the video game series.
“I’m not a gamer so it’s even more like, ‘okay, I’ve never done this before’. I’ve tried. I’m not a gamer. I’ll take a stab at it, but I, I dunno, I grew up on the arcade era, you know, where you go down and you put your quarters in and bang on the buttons. So, I can do that, I’ll play Defender, got a Defender game? Or Asteroids? Sure, bring it on, baby!”
“The controllers now,” he continued. “Oh, press R1, which one’s R1? Oh, I’m dead. I can’t quite get over that moment.”
While Moore’s inability to play through God of War before working on the show will likely be a point of contention for many fans, the showrunner has proven his TV pedigree time and time again.
Over decades of work, Moore has worked on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager as well as Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and the phenomenal Apple TV series For All Mankind. Additionally, as long as the series is respectful to the stories of the games, playing them isn’t essential to adapting them.
