Activision has announced The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the follow-up to last year’s open-world webslinger due for release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in spring 2014.

Developed by Beenox, Amazing Spider-Man 2 follows on from the events of the original game, rejoining Peter Parker as he investigates “the menagerie of Marvel menaces” threatening Manhatten.

A new ‘Hero or Menace’ system will also introduce a morality mechanic, rewarding players for fighting crime and good behaviour, and introducing consequences to those who don’t.

“The first The Amazing Spider-Man game gave players their own beautifully animated, free-roaming city of Manhattan to traverse and explore – a playground of majestic scale in which to live out our common hero fantasies,” said Thomas Wilson, co-studio head of Beenox.

“And the overwhelming message from fans was: ‘MORE!’ That’s what our team is working toward with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – we’re giving gamers more abilities, more upgrades, more challenges, and more freedom to progress. And with the game launching alongside the new movie, offering an expanded interactive experience beyond the film, fans of the franchise won’t want to miss playing it.”

A teaser trailer for the game, shown below, features current-gen footage of the game.

Though only a spring date has been confirmed, Activision says The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due to launch alongside the film which swings into cinemas on May 2, 2014.

Last week, Activision revealed that a handheld port of the original Amazing Spider-Man would be releasing on PlayStation Vita next month.
