Halo 5: Guardians will launch with over 20 multiplayer maps and deliver over 15 more as free DLC by June 2016, 343 has revealed.

In the latest issue of Game Informer, creative director Josh Holmes explained that the decision not to charge for additional multiplayer maps boiled down to not wanting to segregate the multiplayer community.

“As we started on the multiplayer experience for Halo 5, we talked a lot about the problem of dividing the player base,” he said. “When you have paid map packs and content, you divide the player base into two groups: the haves and have nots. The people that have the map pack can play together but the people that don’t cannot.

“That to us is a real problem. So we’re delivering all the maps to all players free so everybody will be able to player together.

“That, we feel, is really important to having a great multiplayer ecosystem.”

The decision to offer all multiplayer maps free of charge will no doubt be welcomed by Halo fans. With E3 right around the corner, fans can expect to discover much more about the next entry in Master Chief’s adventure soon.

Halo 5: Guardians launches exclusively on Xbox One on October 27.
