Alienware’s upcoming Steam Machine will have extremely limited user performed upgrade options so will be replaced by a new system every year, the Dell-owned PC firm has told TrustedReviews.
“Lifecycle wise, consoles update every five, six, seven years, we will be updating our Steam Machines every year,” said Frank Azor, Alienware’s general manager.
Those hoping to pick up the console-priced Alienware Steam Machine and upgrade the system when it begins to chug are out of luck.
“There will be no customisation options, you can’t really update it,” Azor explained. “The platform will continue to evolve as the games become more resource intensive.”
Azor said that those wanting upgrade options should turn to Alienware’s other systems.
“If you actually want to customise your Alienware Steam Machine, maybe change your graphics card out or put in a new CPU, you would be better off with the standard Alienware X51,” he said.
The reason why consoles have proved so popular is that players are given access to a closed system which is typically supported for around five years. Steam Machines initially appeared to be bringing this console-style development to PC gaming, but offering more powerful systems each year doesn’t support this.
