A new expansion pack for Age of Empires 2: HD Edition is in development for release later this year, Microsoft has announced.

The expansion will introduce new civilisations, game modes, campaigns, units and more to the classic PC RTS, and is being developed by the team behind 2013 add-on The Forgotten. An early look at the expansion’s new Camel Archer unit can be seen in the image above.

“We’ll be detailing the expansion throughout the year in developer blogs directly from the team – including one soon revealing the first new civilization,” Microsoft Studios’ Ryan Chaply said on the game’s Steam page, later adding: “If your focus is more on the original AOEII experience, the new content development means you can look forward to additional support and features that benefit every owner.

“Since launch, AOE II HD has come so far – and with the help of the FE team and Skybox, this year is going to be the best yet.”

Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings first launched on PC over 15 years ago, with an HD update arriving on PC in April 2013.
