The UK Government is to make it legally enforceable to restrict the sale of 12-rated games and over to those under 12, reports MCV.
Retailers that sell age inappropriate games to the under 12s could be jailed.
The move is part of today’s new Government process to make the pan-European PEGI ratings system the law.
PEGI is to become the sole classification for video games, with BBFC’s logos being phased out.
“The new system will benefit both parents and industry by creating a stronger, simpler age-rating system,” said Creative Industries Minister Ed Vaizey.
“It will give parents greater confidence that their children can only get suitable games while we are creating a simpler system for industry having their games age-rated.”
Of course there remains nothing to stop uneducated parents from buying the latest Call of Duty for their 10 year old, ignorant to the fact the game’s content could be highly unsuitable.
