Activision has announced it has shut down its Guitar Hero business and discontinued the development of the Guitar Hero title planned for release later this year.

“Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011,” the publisher stated in a release relating to its calendar year 2010 financial results.

Development of open-world action title True Crime: Hong Kong has also been stopped.

Activision added: “These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences.”
