Activision has announced the 2007 release of Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground, a new entry in the skating game series of choice for almost a decade. For the first time players will have the freedom to define their character, story and skating style all based on the choices the player makes on the proving grounds from Philadelphia and Baltimore to Washington, D.C.

The game will feature a Video Editor with full-featured editing tools and visual effects for creating ‘epic skate videos’. Players will also be able to create a fully customisable online Skate Lounge where they’ll be able to hang out with friends in the ultimate pad.

Online play has also been overhauled and it will now flow seamlessly between offline and online play. Proving Grounds will also feature new gameplay mechanics such as skateable terrain altering and building, and Bowl Carving. Also expect even more Nail-the-Trick moves including Nail the Grab and Nail the Manual.

Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground drops players into the skateboarding world like never before,” said Joel Jewett, president of Neversoft. “This is the largest, deepest and most compelling Tony Hawk game ever. You can skate the best lines, define your own style and produce your own videos. You can even take it further by tricking out your own Skate Lounge, where you can hang out and skate with others online. Proving Ground will throw you so deep into the lifestyle of skateboarding that you won’t be able to get out. Hands down, it’s the most exciting Tony Hawk title yet.

For the first time, Activision’s Tony Hawk series will be going up against a real contender in EA’s Skate – billed as a much more technical, skill-based skating game. The strength of the Tony Hawk brand should be enough to maintain its dominance, but Activision is certainly under pressure to deliver this time around.

Contrary to previous reports, Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground is coming to more than just the Xbox 360 and PS3. The Wii, DS and PS2 will also be treated to Tony’s latest, although it seems likely they will be vastly different to the game described above. Look out for more details as the game’s late 2007 release approaches.
