Activision has today announced that downloadable song packs for Guitar Hero II on the Xbox 360 have been a runaway success, hitting platinum status thanks to over 650,000 downloads in only five months.

Each song pack contains three songs and, despite a controversial price of 500 Microsoft Points, their success ranks up there with the most downloaded content on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Guitar Hero III, the next instalment in the 5.5 million selling franchise, is scheduled for release this Christmas.
