There are whispers of new Crash Bandicoot game on the way—a four-player brawler in the vein of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. games.

The rumour arrives courtesy of Jez Corden, of Windows Central (via Pure Xbox). Talking on the Windows Central Gaming Podcast, Corden said:

“New Crash? I wonder where you got that information from? … I think we could see a new Crash Bandicoot, and not only is it going to be a new Crash Bandicoot, but it’s [also] going to be a multiplayer Crash Bandicoot. It’s like a four-player brawler almost but Crash oriented.”

If this is, indeed, what we’re getting, then it makes sense. There is a wave of Smash-alikes at the moment, from MultiVersus to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. (MultiVersus is actually pretty good.) There was once a party game, called Crash Bash, on PlayStation, which allowed four players to challenge one another. It wasn’t really a brawler—more of a Mario Party clone—but you could hit people. A brawler seems perfect for Crash and his ilk, and one wonders why something like this hasn’t happened before

The most recent game in the series bore the subtitle It’s About Time. It was an ingeniously designed, and very challenging, platformer. In VideoGamer’s review of that game, I said:

“When you’re in that zone, there is a certain death-dodging thrill to be had. But all too often it ends in a fall.”
