With the current trajectory of free-to-play titles in the market, it’s likely we will see the quality of free online games skyrocket according to Ngmoco executive Ben Cousins.

According to Develop, Cousins predicts triple-A free-to-play titles with billion dollar budgets will shape the future of the genre.

Speaking at the inaugural Free to Play Summit in London, Cousins stated the freemium model would have a future beyond their current low-end development budgets.

“I am totally 100 per cent convinced that we will soon have a game like Skyrim that’s free to play,” he explained.

He went on to say that single-player narrative games would soon be available for free and monetised through microtransactions.

We’re already beginning to see hints of high-end freemium titles, specifically with the rumoured Project Titan from Blizzard, which is said to be a free-to-play project.

Elsewhere, DC Universe Online has proven incredibly successful since going free-to-play last year.
