According to a report from research firm Ipos MediaCT, new research indicates that consumers – in particular gamers – favour physical media over digital copies.

64 per cent of people (over 1,000 were surveyed) said they preferred physical discs for their games over digital copies.

Gamers’ attraction to physical media has been attributed to both to the used games market and a history of having a physical collection.

“I believe the preference for physical discs amongst next gen gamers reflects the potential value they derive from the pre-owned market, which is holding up the preference for physical,” said Ipsos MediaCT director Ian Bramley.

Bramley added: “Physical games discs have a long and well-established history, which is a deep mindset to change – particularly when gamers build a physical collection as they fear losing digital versions. And in-store browsing is also important to buyers.”

Other consumers are more willing to go digital, though: 45 per cent of music listeners prefer discs and 51 per cent of movie watchers would opt for physical media.
