A massive 6.5 million downloads of Angry Birds games were made on Christmas Day, Rovio has announced.

The figure, nearly equal to the combined 6.8 million Android and iOS activations on Christmas Day, includes downloads of the original game, Seasons and Rio, both paid and free.

“We’re really excited to have such a massive number of new people get acquainted with Angry Birds over the holidays – we have exciting new releases lined up for 2012, and can’t wait to introduce them to the public,” Rovio’s Ville Heijari told AllThingsD.

The downloads figure is around three times that of the two million Angry Birds downloads on Christmas 2010.

Although it’s likely many new mobile device users downloaded more than one version of Angry Birds, the figure still means that Christmas created millions of new Angry Birds players.
