Sony has announced that 5.07 million PSPs have been shipped worldwide, with the US and Canada making up 2.74 million units, and Japan and Asia slightly less at 2.33 million. Despite reasonably close hardware sales, game sales have not been equal for each territory. Out of the 11.2 million games shipped worldwide only 3.9 million were shipped to Japan and Asia, with 7.3 million shipping to the US and Canada. With 48 games available now, Sony predicts that 150 titles will be available by the end of March 2006.

Sony’s UMD format has also sold well, at least in North America, where 4.3 million units have shipped. The number is slightly flattering, however, because of the 1 million copies of Spider-Man 2 which were given away with the first million PSPs. Only 400,000 UMD films have been sold in Japan, where the format has performed significantly worse than in North America.
