Nintendo 3DS users looking to replace their physical library with downloadable versions will soon be able to transfer their save data from 3DS cartridges to their digital copies.

The 3DS Save Data Transfer Tool will be available to download free from the Nintendo eShop this Friday, March 28, and lets users move save data from a 3DS Game Card to a “separately purchased downloadable version” of the same software.

You’ll need both the 3DS cartridge and the downloadable version to transfer your saves, and Nintendo warns that once the save data is moved to the digital version, “it cannot be returned to the Game Card”.

Any save data on the cartridge will be removed once transferred and the cartridge reset to default, leaving you to trade the copy in, give it away, or, I dunno, burn the unneeded cart.

As well as releasing the Save Data Transfer Tool, a selection of Wii U and 3DS titles will be available to download from the eShop later this week, including LEGO City Undercover and Luigi’s Mansion 2.
