Xbox 360 exclusive Kingdoms is a first-person melee game taking advantage of Kinect, Gamasutra has revealed. Development is said to have been moved from Crytek Budapest to Frankfurt – the studio which worked on Crysis 2.

New details surfaced after an anonymous source revealed to Gamasutra that there had been layoffs at Crytek’s Budapest studio. The team has been cut from 80 to 30-35, according to the source, with Microsoft wanting Crytek to move development to the Frankfurt studio.

Until now we’ve had nothing but a vague live-action trailer announcing the game at last year’s E3. The teaser trailer gives the impression of a fantastical or medieval setting, but no other hints to plot have been revealed.

The source also revealed that enough staff have been left “for the time being” to present the game at Microsoft’s E3 press conference. Further details on the game can be expected then.

Kingdoms is currently without a release date.

The revelation that Kingdoms is a first-person game initially conjures up images of Oblivion. Given Kinect’s limitations in terms of moving a character from A to B, (or anywhere at all) however, the chances are it will take the form of something more like Infinity Blade. Either way, the fact that a developer of this pedigree is working on a Kinect game is exciting. Hopefully we’ll get a better picture of things at E3.
