First week sales of the Xbox 360 and its hardware are in, and Microsoft’s new console hasn’t done too badly at all. Despite huge shortages, the console managed to become the fastest selling static console ever in the UK, beating the sales of Nintendo’s GameCube which held the previous record. Exact figures aren’t in, but sales are still expected to fall way short of the PSP’s 185,000 units, but if stock replenishment promises are kept, sales should steadily rise over the coming weeks and months.
“Xbox 360 sales have been tremendous this weekend” said Lisa Morgan, UK Managing Director GAME. “We have sold out almost all of our initial allocation over the weekend, and have seen great sales on games and accessories too. We will be getting more stock in over the next few weeks and expect similar levels of support from consumers and expect the exceptional levels of demand to continue.”
Microsoft will be doubly happy as their two big launch titles, Perfect Dark Zero and Project Gotham Racing 3 took first and second place respectively. Rare’s second launch title, Kameo, only managed to chart at No.6, but with a dry spell for new games until well into January, its overall sales should be quite strong.
Activision’s Call of Duty 2 quite deservedly took the No.3 position and Sega’s Condemned edged out EA’s Need For Speed: Most Wanted to enter at No.4. 2K Games’ Amped 3 deserved to do better, only managing to enter the chart at No.14, among a bottom five consisting of American sports titles and tired current-gen ports.
What isn’t detailed here is the performance of the Xbox Live Arcade titles that were available at launch. Many of the budget downloadable games offer plenty of gameplay for their low price, with Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved and Mutant Storm: Reloaded being our two favourites. With more titles set to launch on the service soon, and a number of impressive looking Unreal Engine 3 arcade titles due next year, the Live Arcade is almost as exciting as the full blown releases.
