Sony sold over 6.5 million PlayStation console units worldwide in the period between November 18 and December 31, 2011, the platform holder has revealed.

This figure breaks down into 3.9 million PlayStation 3 units, which Sony says means the system remains on course to achieve the target of 15 million units sold in its financial year which ends March 31, 2012.

The other 2.6 million is comprised of 1.6 million PSP units, 500,000 PS2 consoles and 500,000 PS Vitas sold in Japan.

In addition, Sony says 1.7 million PlayStation Move units were sold over the holiday period.

It’s worth bearing in mind that these holiday sales include both the lucrative Christmas period and the bumper Thanksgiving holiday in the US.
