2005 has been a successful year for the Nintendo handheld console, following on from the market dominance the Game Boy Advance SP achieved. With almost 3.5 million units sold across Europe and a worldwide figure at approximately 13 million, Nintendo has a lot to celebrate.

Sales of the DS in Europe have been helped by the release of Nintendogs which has sold 1.6 million copies since its European release back in October. Another success for Nintendo was Mario Kart DS which launched in November. Helped by its support for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Service the game has already achieved sales of 800,000 copies across Europe. Nintendogs and Mario Kart also spawned special console packs which proved a great success over the holiday period.

The Game Boy Advance wasn’t to be outdone with Pokèmon Emerald notching up 1.2 million sales since its October release. In 2006 European gamers still have plenty of handheld titles to look forward to, with Animal Crossing finally making it to retail, along with Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, Metroid Prime: Hunters and Brain Training.
