1.6 million World of Warcraft fans could switch to BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, according to a survey by analyst house Lazard Capital Markets.

In the survey, over 50 per cent of 381 respondents said they planned to buy The Old Republic, while 38 per cent stated they have an interest in the title, Develop reports.

However, 33 per cent polled said World of Warcraft’s fourth expansion, Mists of Pandaria, will be incentive for them to re-subscribe to the MMO.

Lazard reached the conclusion that World of Warcraft could lose between 900,000 to 1.6 million players following the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic in December.

World of Warcraft has already seen a decline in its userbase over the last year, with a drop to 10.3 million users.

While it’s always safer to read all polls with a handful of scepticism, the decline in WoW’s userbase already suggests it’s highly likely users will turn to a new MMO.
