No, you’ve not misread the headline. A new “Karate Kid” movie has been announced for release in 2024. But it wasn’t announced as you may imagine it would be, with a big announcement proclaiming the return of the beloved 80’s movie franchise to theatre screens, especially given the rejuvenated interest in the franchise thanks to the success of “Cobra Kai“.
Instead, the movie was announced via parent studio Sony Pictures updating their 2023-2024 movie schedule with a new “Karate Kid” movie listed for a June 7th 2024 release. And, this was all they announced, as the update made no mention of a director, cast, producers, or potential story. It was simply another movie title among a schedule of other movie titles.

Now, you would be forgiven for thinking that this movie must be a spin-off from “Cobra Kai” or at the very least, in someway connected to the series. However, sadly, this does not appear to be the case, as “Cobra Kai” co-creator Jon Hurwitz tweeted out the following response to the news of this new movie:
