When dealing with waves of the Seethe and purging the defilement, your villagers play a crucial role in keeping divine maiden Yoshiro safe and sound. Without them, Soh is more or less guaranteed defeat.
While the starting woodcutter role will serve you well in the early portions of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, you’ll eventually want to weave in different roles to counter new Seethe varieties. For example, the archer role excels at taking down flying Seethe. We’ll walk you through how to unlock new villager roles.
How to unlock new villager roles
You can get new villager roles as rewards in the form of Masks for challenging and defeating the Ominous Presence in most of the stages on Mt. Kafuku. These are essentially bosses that are available once you’ve beaten a stage for the first time, appearing to the left of the stage on the stage selection screen.
For example, after beating Myoko Pass, you can take on Gakinyudo and receive the Archer Mask, and therefore the archer role. Note that a couple of the Masks are unlocked for completing the stages themselves as there are no boss challenges to complete.

Once you’ve unlocked a new role, head to Yoshiro’s tent shrine in any of the villages you’ve freed then select Musubi Upgrades. Here, you can spend Musubi to upgrade each role. These upgrades include bumps to maximum health, attack power, attack speed, and even new attack types.
