With most big AAA releases straddling the previous and current generation of consoles, WB Games Montreal has made the controversial decision to not release Gotham Knights on PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

This effectively bars scores of players with previous-gen consoles from experiencing the antics of Batgirl, Robin, Red Hood and Nightwing as they team to take on the criminal scourge ripping through Gotham after Batman’s death.

Is Gotham Knights Out of PS4?

No, Gotham Knights is not available for PS4, nor Xbox One for that matter. The game was originally penciled in for release on the duo of previous-gen consoles, but earlier this year, the developer confirmed the last-gen versions had been canceled.

Why isn’t Gotham Knights on PS4?

The developer cited a desire to ‘provide players with the best possible gameplay experience’ on current-gen consoles and PC. In a Discord AMA, WB Games Montréal executive producer Fleur Marty explained:

“When considering the scale and scope of Gotham Knights we had to prioritize and focus our efforts to deliver the game at a satisfying level of quality for current gen. We totally understand that this is upsetting to players who don’t own a current gen console yet, and believe me we really didn’t make this decision lightly, but, in the end, we wanted to focus on delivering a game we are truly proud of.”

Fueling the controversy further, WB Games revealed as recently as this month that Gotham Knights will be capped at 30 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Neither will the game offer players a Performance Mode that sacrifices visual fidelity for higher frame rates. Not exactly the Gotham Knights performance we’d expect from the hardware packed into Sony and Microsoft’s current machines, and more in line with frame rates found on PS4 and Xbox One games.
