Parrots are cute creatures added in the Minecraft 1.12 update! With colorful texture and unique behaviors, there is enough reason to tame one, especially if you’re a bird lover! And this article will show you how to tame a parrot in Minecraft.

3 Steps to Tame a Parrot in Minecraft

Before taming a parrot, we should let you know that parrots can only be tamed, not bred. So if you’ve decided to find them to breed, let’s forget about it!

#1 Obtain Food for Parrots

Parrots only eat a certain of seeds in Minecraft and there is a low chance for each seed to successfully tame a parrot. That’s why you should get a lot of them before taming one.

To tame a parrot, you need wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, or beetroot seeds. Wheat and beetroot seeds can be found easily in the farmland of the village structure. They also spawn in some other structures like dungeons, mineshafts, end cities, and woodland mansions.

You can get melon seeds in the woodland mansions, or by finding melon spawn naturally in the savanna and the desert village structure. Melon seeds also spawn in chests inside dungeons and mineshafts. Alternatively, you can trade 1 emerald with the wandering trader for 1 melon seed.

Pumpkin seeds are obtained by most methods like melon ones, except they only spawn naturally in the taiga and snowy taiga village structure.

Still, the best way to get seeds to tame a parrot is to break grass for wheat seeds. Then farm wheat with a Fortune tool to get more wheat seeds.

#2 Find a Parrot

Parrots spawn only in the jungle biome and its variants, including the sparse jungle and bamboo jungle biomes. Not like other mobs, parrots can only spawn on top of 3 blocks: grass, logs, and leaves.

If you’re already in the Jungle and can’t find any parrots, press F3 to open the debug screen to check for your Y coordinate. Parrots only spawn between the Y layer from 1 to 70.

#3 Tame a Parrot

When you’ve found a parrot and have seeds on you, put the seeds into your hot bar and choose it. Then look at the parrot and right-click it!

Each seed has a 10% chance of successfully taming a parrot. You will know when the red heart particles are floating above it! So that’s how to tame a parrot in Minecraft!

Once tamed, you can only allow them to sit down or perch on your shoulder. You can’t feed them anymore to breed parrots in Minecraft.
