If you’re a cat lover, you’ve surely come to the right place! This article will show you how to tame a cat in Minecraft with the easiest step-by-step instructions and all the relevant information about cat taming in Minecraft.

3 Steps to taming a Cat in Minecraft

#1 Get the Cat Food

Cats in Minecraft only eat raw cow and raw salmon despite there being many other types of fish in the game. Let’s see how to get the raw fish!

You can go fishing in any water source for raw cod or salmon with a 60% and 25% chance respectively. With Luck of the Sea enchantment, the chance to catch fish is decreased slightly so for the best possibility, use an unenchanted fishing rod.

Specific mobs can drop raw cod and salmon on death:

  • Guardians and Elder Guardians can drop both raw salmon and cod on death. The chance for raw cod is 40-50%, while the chance to drop raw salmon is only 0.625%.
  • Polar bears have a 25% chance to drop 0-2 raw salmon and a 75% chance to drop 0-2 raw cod on death.
  • Dolphins can drop 0-1 raw cod on death.
  • Cod and Salmon mob always drop 1 corresponding fish item on death. So besides fishing, this is the second most efficient way to get raw cod and salmon.

The chance to get raw fish above can be increased by Looting enchantment. So make sure to use your enchanted sword to kill those mobs.

#2 Find Cats in Minecraft

Cats can only spawn in 2 places: near the village structure and inside a swamp hut in the swamp biome. Every minute in real life, a random place that far away 8-32 blocks from the player is chosen. If that block match all the conditions below, a random cat will spawn.

For the village structures, there have to be at least 5 claim beds (beds that belong to a villager or they’ve been slept on) and no more than 4 cats are inside of the village. If the village doesn’t have any beds, you can craft some and place them randomly inside the village. Then, chase away all the existing cats so more cats can spawn here.

You can always find 1 black cat spawning inside the swamp hut and it never despawns, but be careful of the witch! If there are no cats around in the 16x8x16 area, another black cat will be spawned inside the hut again.

#3 Tame a Cat

When you’ve found some cats, you notice that they’re running away from you so it’s hard to feed and tame them. To stop the cats from running, you must either sneak (shift + move) or hold raw fish in your hand.

Then simply right-click the cat with the raw fish. After a few tries, you will see the hearts floating above the cat. That means you successfully tame a cat!
