For bleed builds, or just for style, learning how to get the White Mask of Varre in Elden Ring will help you out regardless of your motive. The item in question is simply called White Mask, but we all know it belongs to Varre, a mysterious war surgeon NPC you meet at the start of the game. Getting the White Mask, however, can be challenging since it requires going to Mohgwyn Palace, which is a bit of a nightmare location.

How to get the White Mask

There are two ways to get the white mask of Varre in Elden Ring. One involves completing Varre’s questline and transporting to Mohgwyn Palace, while the other is simpler and requires progressing through the game normally until you are levelled enough to get to Mohg. The first method is ideal for those who are under-levelled and want the white mask of Varre as soon as possible.

Get White Mask by completing Varre’s questline

The first method involves completing White Mask Varre’s quest:

  • You will first encounter Varre right after exiting the tutorial area of Elden Ring in the Lands Between. He will be the first NPC you find near the First Step site of grace.
  • Upon finishing Limgrave, you will meet Varre at the very beginning of Liurnia of the lakes, at a location called Rose Church. Here, Varre will hand out three festering fingers and ask you to engage in PvP.
  • At this point, you can use the Festering Finger three times to invade other people. Alterantively, you can head to the Writheblood Ruins in the Altus Plateau and find the invasion sign of the NPC Magnus the Beast Claw.
  • Upon completing the task, White Mask Varre will ask you to serve the lord Mohgwyn with him and give you a cloth called the Lord of Blood’s Favour to be dipped in ‘Maiden’s blood’. Interact with the corpse in the Church of Inhibition. Alternatively, you can go to the Weeping Peninsula and kill Irina if you have no yet started Irina’s questline.
  • Returning to White Mask Varré after getting the blood of a maiden and doing this will reward you with an item called the Pureblood Knight’s Medal (among other things), this item can be used to be teleported instantly to Mohgwyn palace, specifically the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum.
  • To gain the White mask in Elden Ring, teleport to Mohgwyn palace and roam around the bloody lake in the middle until you get invaded by a Nameless White Mask. These will keep spawning and can drop the white mask randomly. Keep eliminating them until one drops the White mask.

This concludes method one of how to get the White mask in Elden Ring. This method is ideal for lower-level bleed builds that want the White mask as early as possible.

Get White Mask by finding another way to Mohgwyn palace

The second method is the conventional method and the one you should do if you’re not in a hurry to get the White mask in Elden Ring.

  • To get to Mohgwyn palace, you will need to have completed Lyndell, Royal Capital, and beaten Morgott, the Omen king.
  • Beating Morgott opens up the route to the Mountaintop of the Giants. Once at the Mountaintop, you must make your way to the Grant lift of Rold to get to the Consecrated snowfield. To do this, you must have both halves of the Haligtree medallion (obtained by beating Latenna’s quest line).
  • Once at the snowfield, you will have to go to the Yelough Anix Ruins. It is nearly impossible to see as you travel the Consecrated snowfield but the route to the ruins is north of the starting area. Going straight will take you to the ruins.
  • Explore the ruins until you come across a portal being guarded by an Albinauric.
  • The portal will teleport you to Mohgwyn Palace. Once there, much like Method one, head to the bloody lake until you are invaded by a Nameless white mask.
  • Kill the invader and you will get the White Mask.

These are the only two methods of getting the White mask in Elden Ring. We wish you good luck on your quest to find this item since Mohgwyn Palace is a dark and perilous place. The White Mask of Varre is an exceptionally powerful piece of armour, especially for bleed builds. While wearing the White Mask, it increases your damage when you inflict bleeding. Those wielding a bleed weapon such as the Rivers of Blood or Bleed Uchigatana will get an added 10% damage boost for 20 seconds, which can be devastating. If you happen to dislike Varre, killing him at the start will give you six Festering Bloody Fingers. It will also lock you out of his quest, which isn’t recommended. It might be tempting, but he has a part to play if you stick with the quest.
