God of War Ragnarok Unlocking the Mask walkthrough

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the Unlocking the Mask main story mission in God of War Ragnarok. The unlikely duo of Thor and Atreus head to Niflheim to track down the last piece of the mask for Odin. It’s a tense union, but a necessary one as matters turn very serious as we near the end of the campaign.

As Unlocking the Mask is part of the main path, it’s story rich. We’re keeping spoilers and major story elements to a minimum, but for the purpose of guiding you through the mission, there are a few in there. You’ve been warned.

Seek Out Huginn in Midgard

Playing as Atreus, you need to get back to Asgard. Take the mystic gateway to the Wildwoods in Midgard. Playing as Atreus, you need to get back to Asgard. Sindri will pop to give Atreus a unique item that comes in handy in hairy situations. Push open the door to Kratos and Atreus’ home, talk to Fenrir and Angraboda, then Huginn to get to Asgard.

Speak with the All-Father

Once you arrive in Atreus’ room, leave the room and head to Odin’s study, listening in on Sif and Thrud’s discussion as you go. A cut scene will follow with Odin inquiring about what happened to Heimdall before turning to the subject of the mask. Odin instructs Atreus to head to Nilfheim accompanied by Thor. The god of thunder is missing though.

Find Thor

Geared up, go up the stairs and talk to Thrud to learn of Thor’s whereabouts. Head out through the main door. Follow Thrud to the Black Thunder, surrender your weapons, and ready up for a bar fight. Defeat the Einherjar alongside Thrud and Ingrid, then find Thor worse for wear. When Atreus is caught by the Einherjar captain, tap circle to get loose and Thor will step in to deal with the captain. After a cut scene where Thrud and Thor have it out, Huginn will take Atreus and Thor to Niflheim.

✓ Tip

If you take a right at the start of the Niflheim portion of the quest, you can find a chest and a coffin to loot that include Dwarven Steel, Agardian Ingots, Hacksilver, and more useful materials.

Actually Find the Final Mask Fragment

Once you reach The Eternal Chasm in Niflheim, head right and follow the ice corridor until it opens up. Fight off the enemies and aim the mask at the barred pathway at the back to have Thor clear path. 

Press on to reach the Frozen Caverns. Defeat the enemies then point the mask at the wall of ice to have Thor clear it. Move through the cave, defeat the enemies, then drop down. Follow the left path to loot a Legendary chest with the Bitter Squirrel runic summon inside, then backtrack and grapple across the gap.

Defeat the Frost Ancient

Continue downwards fighting off Nightmares and Hel-Walkers as you go until you reach the Pale Meadows. Here you’ll take on a Frost Ancient. When it exposes its chest, shoot the white light. Rinse and repeat while avoiding its attacks and those of the Hel-Walkers that spawn occasionally. Defeating the Frost Ancient rewards you with Shattered Runes, Bonded Leather, and Ydalir Timber.

Pull out the mask and get Thor to clear the path ahead of rubble. Continue forward and Thor will jump both of you up to the cliff above and into the Mist Fields. Defeat the Nightmares and Hel-Walkers along the path. Drop down the ledge ahead and follow the path up the mountain to get the mask fragment.

Odin will pop up along with Sif and the Valkyries, blaming Ateus for Heimdall’s death. Thor will turn hostile. After a daring escape, Atreus will make it out of Niflheim in one piece and reunite with Mimir and Kratos.

Return to Sindri’s House

Head back to Sindri’s house to find the gang waiting.

Consider Tyr’s Plan

Sit through the cutscene, which includes a big ol’ twist. Once it’s over, head for the Mystic Gateway outside Sindri’s house and make your way back to Midgard to complete the story quest.
