The latest installation in the God Of War series retains most of the previous mechanics that made it a fan favorite, including various weapons, upgrades, and the ever-powerful runic attacks. However, many players – God of War veterans and beginners alike – may find it confusing figuring out how to upgrade runic attacks.

What are Runic Attacks
If you’re new to God Of War or just need a refresher, Runic Attacks are special skills that can be equipped with weapons like the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. There are two types of Runic attacks: light and heavy runic attacks.
You get some Light Runic attacks at the beginning of the game with the weapons you start off with, but by and large, you will have to collect these runic attacks by opening legendary chests you find as you progress through the main story and side quests.
How to upgrade Runic Attacks in God of War Ragnarok
Unlike weapon upgrades, runic attacks can’t be upgraded with crafting material. Instead, they require experience (XP) to be upgraded, and lots of it. For example, the final upgrade for the heavy runic attack, Mists of Helheim, costs 9,000 XP, which is a pretty hefty amount.
For this reason, players should prioritize getting more Luck in the game as it increases the amount of XP you earn, allowing you to upgrade your favorite runic attacks for a stronger build.
If you’ve got the required XP to upgrade your runic attack, here’s how to upgrade:
- Open up your inventory.
- Navigate to the Weapons tab.
- Select the Runic Attack you want to upgrade
- Press and hold Square if you have enough XP to upgrade the runic attack.
On a side note, if you want to upgrade a Runic attack further to level two or three, you’ll first need to push R2 to toggle the selection to the desired level and then hit the ‘Square’ key.
