How is Foamstars like Splatoon?

For starters, both games are party shooters where you use colorful ammo to paint and control the arena. For Foamstars this is foam, and for Splatoon it’s ink. The gameplay for both looks very similar on the surface.

Each Foamstars character has a colorful foam they can shoot that helps them traverse around the map more easily. Like Splatoon, this covers the arena in bright colors, making for a very similar-looking experience.

One of Foamstars’ modes, Rubber Ducky Party, is very similar to the Tower Control mode in Splatoon. Both modes feature having to stand on a surface, whether the tower or rubber ducky, to advance it to the enemy’s side of the map. The winner is determined by which team gets the rubber ducky or the tower to the opposing side first.

How is Foamstars different from Splatoon?

While the games have many similarities, they’re also different. Foamstars is made by a different company, Square Enix, then Splatoon, which is made by Nintendo. They’re not even available on the same consoles. Foamstars is for PlayStation, while Splatoon is for Nintendo Switch.

Foamstars also is different in that instead of creating your own Inkling, you’ll choose from a roster of characters to play as. Each character has their own abilities and weapons, whereas you can customize your inkling with different weapons instead.

Splatoon has more game modes than Foamstars, too. And, many of the game modes that are in Foamstars do not have an equivalent in Splatoon. Foamstars matches aren’t even won by covering the arena in your color of foam – the foam is only to improve mobility.

Unlike Splatoon

For those who haven’t played, the main modes for Splatoon, Turf War and Splat Zones, specifically revolve around covering more terrain in your color paint than the opposing team. Foamstars doesn’t have any mode like these. The goal of Foamstars is more about defeating enemy players.

The foam itself also differs from the ink in Splatoon. The foam can be built up to create new terrain to slide across and travel around. The ink in Splatoon cannot be used like this.

While it’s easy to see why comparisons have been made, they’re two different games. In fact, in an interview with VGC, producer Kosuke Okatani said that the team is bored of all the comparisons with Splatoon.
