Dragon’s Dogma 2 makes it extremely difficult to start a new game without some tinkering. Thankfully, there’s a patch incoming for the game that will let players start a new save file without having to dive into their game folders.
While the upcoming Dragon’s Dogma 2 patch doesn’t have a confirmed date yet, and will likely roll out on platforms at different times, we have a vague idea of what features are going to be implemented. The ability to start a new save is one of them.
How to start a new game in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
In order to start a new game, you’re going to need to know how to delete your save file in Dragon’s Dogma 2. It’s worth noting that it’s not recommended that you do this often. We’ve already seen how the inclusion of Denuvo, alongside people deleting their saves, is getting people banned. This is happening as there is a daily limit of 5 activations in a single day, and starting a new save is triggering a “new activation.”
While this highlights one of the many concerns with Denuvo in games, though until the next Dragon’s Dogma 2 update is here it’s going to be one of the many risks.
After you have deleted your save file in Dragon’s Dogma 2, which is found at the following location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\102561949\2054970\remote
Inside this folder, you will see win64_save which you can delete to make space for a new save file. Alternatively, you will also be able to backup your save files using this, and it will give you the ability to load in specific save states if you’re well organised.
Why does Dragon’s Dogma 2 not have a New Game feature?
Dragon’s Dogma 2 doesn’t have a New Game feature on purpose. The original was similar – no options to start a new save. The only option has always been to manually organise your saves, which has always been a tedious and overly complicated process.
Before the latest patch notes were revealed, Capcom posted a blog announcement stating “We are looking at adding a feature to the Steam version of the game that will allow players that are already playing to restart the game.” It’s sort of astounding that this feature wasn’t considered to begin with, and I can’t think of any other games where you only get a single save file ever.
There’s surely some level of intention here. Your in-game actions have consequences, and you definitely become far more attached to your characters too. Yet still, it’s really annoying faux-pas.
Is it safe to start a new game in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
Honestly, while it’s possible to start a new game in Dragon’s Dogma 2 through the use of file editing, the risk of a soft ban is too great for it to be worth it. One of the most important Dragon’s Dogma 2 tips that I recommended was to take great care with creating a character, and to consider the consequences of your actions.
